WITH the first and second generation having built up one of Asia’s biggest crane businesses, the third generation of the Tat Hong family is now expanding into new ventures.
Andrew Ng, the second son of Tat Hong CEO Roland Ng, is running a small family investment holding company called Triplestar. Shareholders are his father, older brother Chen Wei and younger brother Christopher.
Triplestar currently has an investment in a healthcare clinic and a drillship builder. Most recently, it worked with a partner to start a childcare and enrichment centre called Posso Preschool at the Big Box mall in Jurong East. Total investments add up to around S$10 million.
Mr Andrew Ng, 32, began his career in project finance with a bank, before venturing into investment banking. He left investment banking in 2013. “I didn’t like the intense, cut-throat culture. It involved a lot of pitching, dealing with various customers … on a long-term basis, I prefer to do something with my family,” he tells BT.
Triplestar was set up in end-2013. Mr Ng looks for established companies to invest in, typically small to medium-sized enterprises. “Some companies are facing succession issues … for others, having a larger player to support them can give them access to new markets,” he says.
